A few weeks ago, a friend of mine who works at a toy store got me hip to the phenomenon that are Silly Bandz. If — like me — you don’t have the pleasure of sharing your home with a tween, you’ve probably never heard of this new trend either, but, oh boy, let me tell you, SILLY BANDZ ARE HUGE.
At first I thought my friend was exaggerating when she told me that there are parents who’ve requested to be called the moment Silly Bandz hit the shelves at her store, so, I headed over to Google to investigate the matter further. What I found was page after page of Silly Bandz frenzy.
What are Silly Bandz, you ask? Well, basically, they’re rubber bands that come in different shapes (animals, letters, stars, hearts, etc.) and kids wear them on their wrists and trade them with each other. When you take one off, it goes back to its original shape. A box of 24 costs $5 and being the only person in your class who doesn’t have them is, obviously, LIKE THE WORST THING THAT COULD EVER HAPPEN. EVER.
I know, I don’t get it either you guys. I think it’s because we’re old.
What I do get, however, is that the Silly Bandz people are making bank!
I was talking to another friend about this recently, about how great it would be to come up with a simple product that would sell so well, and we were stumped. “It’s all been done,” she said, “Pet Rock, Beanie Babies, Sea Monkeys…what’s left?”
And then, yesterday, I saw Luki playing with his favorite “toy” and it hit me:
My multi-million dollar idea: EMPTY BOXX!
That extra “x” is there on purpose. To make it more X-citing and X-treme.
Obviously, I’d offer more choices in design. If the Vick’s Cool Mist Humidifier is not your thing, you can order the Black & Decker Juicer Empty Boxx or the Puma Speed Cat Sneaker Empty Boxx for your little one. And, for the more hipster and environmentally conscious parents, I’d sell a completely organic, biodegradable, BPA-free Empty Boxx (for a higher price, of course).
The greatest thing about this idea? The loads of money I’ll save on shipping materials!
